Adaptive headlamps and a more comprehensive safety package are standard equipment on the all-new Ascent. Although the Ascent’s performance on the trail is impressive, the vehicle’s design is far from Subaru’s signature style.

Every aspect of this vehicle is familiar; it appears like an Outback, vast and tall, or a calorific Forester—you may choose. There are enough seats for up to eight people inside, but we prefer the seven-seat layout with the two captain’s chairs in the center row. Large windows and low beltlines on most Subarus give the Ascent a spacious, light interior. The Ascent borrows almost all of its design from the Outback. The only different parts are the higher nose and the horizontal lines in the lower front bumper.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent Onyx appears like an embiggened Outback on the sides of the body. That is a word. Probably. The Ascent’s high-mounted taillights are a nod to Subaru’s other boxy crossover, the Forester.

Large air vents and an asymmetrical dash make the interior of the Ascent more about form than utility, and there’s plenty of room to stretch out. For practicality’s sake, there are a lot of nooks and holders inside.

Families with multiple children or a large family will appreciate the Ascent’s spacious interior. The Ascent, like the Outback, promises ample space for hikers and their luggage and the ability to transport large groups to and from the next trailhead.

Instead of two rows of seats for a maximum of four passengers, the Ascent features three rows for up to eight passengers—and 19 cupholders for 2.4 drinks per person. With its roomy first and second rows, ample luggage space, and ability to tote people (and beverages), it earns a perfect score of 9.

There is lots of flexibility and a sturdy cloth or leather upholstery in the front two seats for all-day comfort. Every Ascent above the base model has an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. However, none of the seats can be adjusted for height, which we think is a mistake.

There are 39 inches of legroom in row two, which is enough for anyone with long legs. There is no additional charge for captain’s chairs to be installed on the Limited and Touring models; they are included in a $1,500 option that also includes a power liftgate and keyless ignition on the Ascent Premium. As long as you’re not too tall, you’ll be able to sit comfortably in the third row.

The third row in a tiny crossover has 31.7 inches of leg room, whereas the third row in a large three-row vehicle like the Volkswagen Atlas has just a few inches less. When the third row is folded forward, there is an additional 47 cubic feet of storage space behind it. The Ascent can contain 86 cubic feet of stuff, enough for a REI super sweep or three if row two is removed.

Aside from the fact that the Ascent has 19 cupholders, it also has up to six USB ports for charging your devices. Even if the Ascent’s leather or cloth seats get dirty, we have no qualms about rubbing dirt into them. They seem tough and long-lasting no matter what’s inside.


There aren’t many cars like the Subaru Ascent out there that don’t have V-6 power or even more than one viable powertrain. Every Ascent is equipped with a 260-engine 2.4-liter turbo flat-4 driving all four wheels through a CVT. To us, the Ascent’s smooth ride is more significant than anything else, and that’s why we gave it a 6.

The 2.4-liter flat-4 has enough power to accomplish passing maneuvers and tow up to 5,000 pounds behind it, although it’s entrusted with transporting more than two tons of family crossover. It’s not the best engine in any crossover, but it gets the job done. It’s easy to cruise around town and get more than 20mpg with a light right foot. You’ll get better gas mileage if you don’t use the turbo.

The Ascent is equally adept at tackling grueling terrain or a slew of weekend chores. In addition to its 8.7-inch ground clearance, the car has a tight 38-foot turning circle and incredibly light steering. It’s easy to park and maneuver, making it ideal for both trails and shopping malls.

Even with the 20-inch wheels on the Limited and Touring variants, the Ascent cruises along at a smooth pace. The Ascent, like other Subarus, has no problem navigating snowy canyons or muddy trails. Even though there is no front-drive Ascent, the conventional all-wheel-drive system can quickly transfer power from the front to the back. All-wheel drive makes it even better, and the vehicle’s fuel economy isn’t adversely affected.
